6 Tips For A Healthy Mind

dreamstime_xxl_53836358At LIFETIME Spines, we’re more than a chiropractic clinic. We strive to promote optimum overall health in each one of our clients, and that includes promoting a healthy mind as well as a healthy body. Living a full, healthy life isn’t just about keeping your body free of health conditions. You won’t experience the vitality of overall well-being unless your mind is healthy too.

Try These Tips For  A Healthy Mind

Meditation creates a time and space where your mind is allowed to heal while the body rests in a state of deep relaxation. The mind is active and aware during meditation, but it is also quiet, which creates an ideal environment for your mind to clear and recenter. During meditation, your thoughts and emotions are allowed to surface unencumbered. Rather than follow these thoughts and feelings, you simply acknowledge them as they are, realizing that there is more to you than thoughts, perceptions, and emotions.

Eat Right

Your body and brain prefer certain fuels over others, so stay hydrated and keep track of what you’re eating. You may notice, for example, that you just “feel better” when avoiding certain foods. To promote a healthy mind and healthy brain function, your diet should include a variety of properly prepared foods, including a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Not only will daily exercise provide improved strength, muscle mass, bone density, oxygen consumption, and cholesterol levels, but it will also benefit your mind. Regular exercise can help you relax easier and sleep better, it can improve your brain’s ability to learn, adapt, and process, and it can relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. If typical gym workouts don’t tickle your fancy, try yoga, dance, swimming, or biking. You can also work up a sweat cleaning your home, playing recreational sports, or simply walking everywhere you go.

Be Social

Having a solid social support network can greatly benefit your mind. Failing to regularly spend time with friends and family can lead to feelings of loneliness, isolation, and even inadequacy. This network also provides a resource for advice, distractions, and open ears. If your social support network is quite small, you can connect with new people at school, at work, and through social clubs and outdoor activities.

Laugh Daily

Laughter is a great treatment for many of the things that plague both the body and the mind. Not only can laughter help your body relax and boost your immune system, but it can also release endorphins and reduce stress. Humor is also very effective in helping change one’s perspective. Allowing something to be humorous makes it less threatening and allows you to look at the situation from a greater distance, feeling less overwhelmed.

One of the simplest ways to improve your mental health is by forcing yourself to think. Make problem solving a personal goal, and try to think your way to a solution before seeking assistance. Avoid “cheats” such as calculators, word game hints, etc. in order to really exercise your brain. You may consider downloading a word or number game app or a brain training app onto your smartphone.

Stimulate Your Brain

Your brain needs stimulation beyond the typical problem solving and other “think” processes. You can simultaneously stimulate the brain and relax the body by reading a book or watching a thought-provoking movie. Try to choose subjects that are of interest to you but also make you ask questions. Don’t forget that a little bit of fun is only going to improve your mental health.
